New Mexico’s Dept of Agriculture Wants Public Input On Hemp – Meeting Times Listed

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture begins a series of public hearings today on the hemp cultivation rule.

Growing hemp is currently illegal in New Mexico. The Department of Agriculture is proposing rules to help the future of commercial hemp growth in the state, but in order to best define it, they are now seeking public comment.

Currently, the proposed rules say that people interested in growing hemp would have to apply for a license at least five weeks prior to growing hemp. Additionally, there would be a licensing fee of about $900 per location in some places, along with inspection and testing requirements and procedures for destroying plants that contain too much THC.

Hemp can be used to make a wide range of products including cosmetics, construction materials and clothing.

But, before farmers move forward, laws will need to be put in place.

Spokesperson Kristie Garcia, of the Department of Agriculture, says that once all hearings are conducted, a hearing officer will make the final recommendation.

A full list of the currently proposed rules may be found at www.nmda.nmsu.edu.
