Although MCT Oil Banned In Michigan Regulators Won’t Start Testing For It Until October This Year

Michigan marijuana regulators know some vaping products contain a potentially harmful ingredient, but they don’t plan to test for it until October.

That’s when new testing requirements will begin for medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, an ingredient often derived from coconut or palm oil, according to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA).

Studies have shown that inhaling MCT oil has the potential to cause respiratory problems, such as shortness of breath or lung inflammation.

It’s used to dilute THC distillate oil, either because it makes it easier for vaping devices to heat up and convert to an inhalable aerosol, or because its cheaper than THC oil and translates to greater profits for producers, said Cassin Coleman, chair of the National Cannabis Industry Association scientific advisory committee and owner of a marijuana consulting business.

MCT oil is not allowed for use in Michigan vaping products, but it’s also not tested for, meaning unscrupulous producers are able to slip it in without being detected.
