Moroccan authorities are intensifying efforts to regulate and expand the production of pharmaceutical drugs derived from cannabis, with a series of high-level meetings and site visits taking place over the past week.
The initiative, led by the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities, aims to develop the domestic pharmaceutical industry and ensure a structured supply chain for cannabis-derived medications.
According to Hespress AR sources from the agency, these meetings have focused on monitoring the supply process of raw cannabis materials to pharmaceutical companies and ensuring compliance with contractual agreements with cooperatives.
The primary objective is to enhance local drug production, particularly for chronic pain management, sleep disorders, cancer treatments, epilepsy, and muscle spasms.
Three of Morocco’s largest pharmaceutical firms are set to begin producing cannabis-based medications this year, prioritizing treatments that address critical health needs.
To support this endeavor, specialized research teams have been mobilized, and partnerships with medical schools and university hospitals are being established to facilitate clinical monitoring of these new drugs.
Regulatory inspections have been conducted across key production facilities, including three laboratories in the Casablanca region, as well as manufacturing sites in Taounate, Bab Berred, Meknes, and Marrakech.
These visits are part of a broader strategy to oversee the legal cultivation, processing, and distribution of cannabis for medicinal and industrial use.
The Moroccan government is also collaborating with medical professionals and industry experts to develop guidelines and prescriptions for various conditions, ensuring a smooth entry of cannabis-based treatments into the domestic market.
The Ministry of Industry is actively supporting research and innovation in this sector, recognizing its potential to add value to the national cannabis supply chain and accelerate the development of the industry.
To maintain strict regulatory compliance, specialized monitoring teams have been deployed to oversee production processes in licensed facilities, while additional support is being provided to train farmers and cooperatives on best practices. This initiative marks a significant step in Morocco’s strategy to position itself as a leader in the legal cannabis pharmaceutical market.
