Australia: Olympic kayaker jailed alongside his younger brother over an alleged failed plot to smuggle up to $200m worth of cocaine into Australia has secured a major court win.

An Olympic kayaker jailed alongside his younger brother over an alleged failed plot to smuggle up to $200m worth of cocaine into Australia has secured a major court win.

Silver medallist and former world champion Nathan Baggaley and his brother Dru were both sentenced to more than 20 years’ jail each after being found guilty in 2021 of attempting to import a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

On Friday, Queensland’s Court of Appeal allowed Nathan’s appeal of his conviction, setting aside the original verdict and ordering a retrial.

Court of Appeal Justice David Boddice will publish his reasons on a later date.
