Five arrested over $80 million drug haul hidden in excavator after international police operation
Five men have been arrested across Sydney and London after an international police operation uncovered 450kg of the drug MDMA.
The drugs – which had a street value of $79m – had been hidden in an excavator imported into Australia from the UK, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.
Authorities launched Operation Centinel North Hart in March following the detection by the Australian Border Force (ABF) of the suspect shipment after it arrived in Brisbane from Southampton.
An x-ray of the machine revealed anomalies in its arms.
Forensics officers examined the machine and removed 226 plastic bags containing a crystalline substance. Laboratory tests revealed it to be MDMA, also known as ecstasy.
The excavator was delivered to a Sydney address before police raided multiple properties across the city’s west yesterday and arrested two men. Officers also seized about $1.2 million in cash.
A 33-year-old Mortlake man and a 42-year-old Greystanes man have been charged with attempting to possess commercial quantities of border controlled drugs.
