Bid to smuggle 400 kg Cannabis to Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu foiled

A special police team confiscated 400 kg ganja (Cannabis), meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, from a fibreglass boat at Keechankuppam Fishing Harbour on Friday and arrested five persons.

Police sources said the seized contraband was valued at Rs.1 crore. The boat owner, Mohan, 37, Jagadish, 34, of Keechankuppam, Silambu Selvam, 35, of Akkaraipet, and Nivas, 30, and Saravanan, 37, of Pappakoil were arrested..

Acting on a tip-off that ganja brought from Andhra Pradesh was being routed to Sri Lanka, the special team carried out the operation in which the fibreglass boat worth Rs.5 million and four motorcycles were also seized. Nagapattinam Town police registered a case.

The Coastal Security Group, Q-Branch Police and special teams were jointly trying to prevent ganja smuggling through the sea route, police sources said.

Superintendent of Police G. Jawahar inspected the confiscated boat and the contraband.

Warning fishers involved in smuggling ganja to Sri Lanka of stern action, Jawahar sought the cooperation of people in the coastal hamlets to curb the crime.

Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, V. Balakrishnan honoured Sub-Inspector Balamurugan, who led the special team, with a Certificate of Appreciation. (The Hindu)
