BREAKING: Steve Marks Out as OLCC Director Signaling Change in Oregon Cannabis Policy

As reported by Willamette Week, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has asked for and received the resignation of Steve Marks, the long-time Executive Director of the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission.
What this means for Oregon’s cannabis industry remains to be seen, as there has been no announcement from the Governor’s office regarding Marks’ replacement. Many in the industry are hopeful that the support the industry showed Governor Kotek in 2022’s election will lead to more industry-friendly reforms and a retreat from the heavy-handed regulatory approach that dominated Marks’ tenure.
Marks’ departure comes less than a month after the announced retirement of Rick Garza, director of Washington’s Liquor and Cannabis Board. Two of the oldest and most mature recreational cannabis markets in the country will be under new leadership at a time when the prospect of federal legalization appears closer than ever.
