California Labor Commissioner’s Office shuts down hemp seed farm in Half Moon Bay, workers not paid

The California Labor Commissioner’s Office has shut down a hemp seed farm in Half Moon Bay, where at least 13 of the farm’s full-time employees allege they have not been paid since Dec. 17. Reports the SF Chronicle

Castillo Seed Co. acknowledged missing payments in a letter sent to its mostly low-income, Latino workforce in January that The Chronicle obtained. Employees have also complained of being sent home with checks that bounced, causing collateral financial hardship — including bank fees and missed car payments — at a time when they could scarcely afford it.
