CDU relativizes cannabis withdrawal – focus on security and economy
2025-03-03 | While CDU leader Friedrich Merz had announced a withdrawal of the partial legalization of cannabis during the election campaign, a more cautious line is now emerging. In view of geopolitical uncertainties and economic challenges, the issue seems to be taking a back seat, reports LTO.
CDU politician Thorsten Frei emphasized that the Union’s priorities are security, migration and the economy (we reported). Nevertheless, party colleagues such as Günter Krings and Tino Sorge are sticking to the course of cannabis reversal, as reported by the Ärztezeitung. However, the SPD is unlikely to be prepared to withdraw its own law.
The evaluation of the law, the first results of which are expected in October 2025, could be decisive. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that a well-founded assessment is not expected until the second half of the year, according to ZDF. The police union (GdP) continues to see problems with the black market and controls, but is calling for reform instead of a complete withdrawal. The Association of Judges warns against high compensation demands from cannabis clubs and emphasizes the relief of the judiciary. A possible compromise between the CDU/CSU and SPD could be not to develop the law any further for the time being, but to wait for the evaluation.
