Resolution states Barr has “taken deliberate actions to violate the rights of the American people”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and Chairman of its Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today introduced a Congressional Resolution seeking an inquiry into whether the House of Representatives should impeach Attorney General William P. Barr. The resolution has 35 co-sponsors.

“Attorney General Barr has undermined our judicial system and perverted the rule of law,” said Congressman Steve Cohen.  “In the past few weeks alone, Barr has ordered the attack on peaceful protestors in Lafayette Park, in violation of their constitutional rights, and moved to drop charges against Michael Flynn, the President’s former campaign advisor, despite his guilty pleas. He fired without any explanation the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York who was overseeing investigations into the President’s associates and possibly the President himself.  The pattern here is unmistakable.  Barr obstructs justice by favoring the President’s friends and political allies. He abuses his power by using the Department of Justice to harass, intimidate and attack disfavored Americans and the President’s political opponents.  My oath to support and defend the Constitution compels me to confront this corruption.  Congress is a co-equal branch of government and we must get to the bottom of this and hold Bill Barr accountable.”

The resolution specifies instances of Barr’s abuse of office at the behest of President Trump, including his use of pretextual antitrust investigations against industries he disfavors; withholding subpoenaed information, including Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s full report; failing to comply with legitimate subpoenas issued by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform; and prohibiting the referral of an intelligence Community whistleblower complaint to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The resolution also states that Barr eroded confidence in the judicial system by questioning the legitimacy of Department of Justice investigations into the 2016 Presidential election; misleading Congress and the public about the Mueller report; soliciting foreign assistance about the origins and integrity of the investigation into foreign influence in the 2016 election; and has obstructed justice by interfering in specific cases that affect the President, his family, friends or interests.

The measure calls upon the House Judiciary Committee to inquire into these matters under the same House rules applied during the impeachment inquiry into President Trump last year.
