Germany: Cannabis cultivation at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences blocked by legal loopholes

German Cannabis Business Association reports

10/20/2024 | Despite a new study module on cannabis cultivation, the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences is not yet allowed to grow hemp plants. The reason for this is the lack of regulations regarding scientific cultivation, as reported by the mdr in an article and a video report. Specifically, this is due to the lack of the Consumer Cannabis Science Competence Ordinance (KCanWV).

The Department of Horticulture has expanded the “Horticultural Plant Production ” course to include teaching content on cannabis cultivation. This has already led to a significant increase in student numbers. In the current winter semester, 43 first-semester students have enrolled, compared to 25 in 2022.

For the time being, the university is only planning to grow industrial hemp without intoxicating effects. Since April, the university has been waiting for concrete regulations and permits for scientific cultivation. As an alternative, cooperation with agricultural businesses in the region is being examined.

Despite the difficulties in cultivation, interest in the cannabis module is high. The lectures are well attended, including by students from other disciplines.
