Obviously the local expat bankers didn’t get there first, otherwise, the find would have been hoovered up in seconds!
Officers from police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau were called to Chung Hom Kok beach in Stanley on Thursday afternoon after a man reported that he found 19 packages containing white powder which turned out to be HK$19 million worth of cocaine.
The report was filed around 4 pm yesterday as the man first found 11 packages – all in blue plastic wrapping with a label that read “TNT”, which were suspectedly brought to the shore by the tide.
Each package was about 12-by-22-centimeters in size and the man opened one of the packages only to find a significant amount of white powder. He subsequently reported it to the police.
Police soon came to cordon off the area and evacuated the swimmers nearby, while officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau were called to the scene.
After a thorough examination, police confirmed that the white powder was cocaine with firefighters finding five more cocaine bricks in the water.
During the operation, police seized a total of 19 cocaine bricks, weighing about 19 kg in total and worth about HK$19 million.
The case is now being handled by the police’s Narcotics Bureau.
