A Manchester-based charity called CannCare has announced it will provide support to medical cannabis patients in the UK facing discrimination after a rise in reported issues.
The charity, which opened its doors on 1 March, offers assistance to patients using cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) when they face problems with housing associations, local councils, law enforcement, and employers who may not understand the legal status of these prescriptions.
Despite medicinal cannabis being legal in the UK for over six years, patients regularly experience discrimination from those who believe they are breaking the law. The organisation has already successfully resolved a landmark case involving a West Sussex patient who was threatened with eviction from her rental property for consuming her prescribed medication.
“Many people still aren’t aware that medicinal cannabis has been legal here in the UK for six and a half years,” said CannCare CEO and founder, Callum Jones. “As a result, it’s increasingly common for patients to experience discrimination from those who believe that they’re breaking the law.
“We’ve seen this happen firsthand. It can be an incredibly stressful experience for patients. We want to see a future where all CBPM patients in the UK can confidently take their prescription medication without fear of harassment, prosecution, or persecution.”
Beyond advocacy work, CannCare plans to create both online and in-person communities for UK medicinal cannabis patients through a digital platform and events. The organisation has also joined the UK’s Cannabis Industry Council and is planning patient outreach initiatives across the country in the coming months.
