Riviera Maya News reports………After 30 days of the new law being registered in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), medical companies can begin importing cannibas-based products such as beverages, cosmetics and food supplements, to be use in Mexican patients.
Sánchez Tepoz says that to date, 294 individual permits have been authorized for the importation of drugs with cannabidiol, 80 percent of which are for pediatric patients with epilepsy, cancer or dermatological diseases.
However, Sanchez Tepoz clarified that the reform that was approved in Congress does not include approval for the self-cultivation of marijuana.
Regarding the recreational use of marijuana, he mentioned that they have received 431 requests over the last two years, all of which have been denied since Cofepris is not authorized to endorse them, however, seven of the cases have been filed with the Supreme Court.
The use of cannabis-based medicine was approved in June by the new regulatory framework of the General Health Law and the Federal Criminal Code.
President Enrique Pena Nieto must sign the bill into law to legalize cannabis for medical and scientific uses in the country. The bill passed 371-11. The finalization of legalizing cannabis based products is expected to take place during the first three months of 2018.
Once signed, the ruling “eliminates the prohibition and criminalization of acts related to the medicinal use of marijuana and its scientific research, and those relating to the production and distribution of the plant for these purposes.” It will legalize the medical and scientific use of cannabis, as well as its production and distribution for such purposes.
