Narco-Sub intercepted off Guyana with cocaine

A narco-submarine was intercepted off Guyana’s coast during a joint operation between local and US law enforcement agents.

The US Embassy in Georgetown said the self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) was intercepted on March 21 by crew of the USS Leyte Gulf approximately 150 miles off the coast of Guyana.

The vessel was carrying 2,370 kilograms of cocaine.

Four people were onboard the SPSS and they were detained by law enforcement from prosecution in the United States.

The embassy hailed the “landmark” seizure as a good omen for the US cooperation with Guyana in the fight against narcotics trafficking.

“The US Government remains committed to its support of the Government of Guyana and its Caribbean partners in developing ever-greater capacity to disrupt illicit trafficking and transnational crime to advance citizen security,” the embassy added.
