Nebraska lawmakers hear comments on bills that would regulate hemp products like delta-8

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Two bills focused on regulating hemp in Nebraska were in front of a legislative committee Wednesday.

LB316 looks to limit the legal amount of THC allowed in hemp products like delta-8, a lesser potent version of cannabis. Lawmakers supporting it say it would cut down on and essentially ban synthetic marijuana substances which they say are dangerous and stronger than advertised.

“These products are sold in many states exploiting misunderstanding in the law,” said bill co-sponsor State Sen. Kathleen Kauth of Omaha. “The ability of manufactures who constantly tweak the chemical composition of the substance and make something that is ‘new’ and not yet banned has become a cat and mouse game between regulators and manufactures. This bill would stop the influx of dangerous products mascarading as hemp and clean up the illegal marketplace that has developed.”

Kauth says LB316 would not put a ban on CBD products or hemp farming. It would also have not effect on the transportation of those products with correct documentation.
