Foot patrol policing has proven effective in Mataura after a cannabis growing operation and unlawful guns were found after a police officer smelt the illegal enterprise while walking past a house.
Police constable Brett Dillon was on his beat through Mataura recently when he smelt a “very pungent scent of cannabis, even from the footpath.”
“It was difficult to tell which property the smell was coming from but further investigation and monitoring from the street proved helpful,” Dillon said.
“We began to make enquiries, and then we noticed what appeared to be a false wall in an external garage on the property very close to where the strong smell of cannabis came from.”
