NORML: New York: Legislation to Qualify Medical Cannabis for Insurance Coverage

Legislation is currently pending in New York, Senate Bill S8837, which seeks to redefine how medical marijuana is classified in order to qualify it for insurance coverage.

If passed, the bill would deem medical marijuana a “prescription drug,” “a covered drug,” and “a healthcare service” in order to qualify medical cannabis dispensed properly under the state’s access program as medical assistance, covered by insurance and worker’s compensation law, elder law, and social services law.
