Northern Ireland cocaine dealer has sentencing delayed so he can play cricket in Australia

The 31-year-old father of one, who is captain of his local cup-winning cricket team, also admitted to possession of cocaine as well as a number of prescription drugs including diazepam and tramadol.

A cricket captain turned cocaine dealer has had sentencing deferred to allow him to travel to Australia to take to the crease for Melbourne.

Having heard that Andrew Millar had been given “the opportunity of a lifetime” by playing cricket in Oz, District Judge Peter King deferred passing sentence until April next year, by which time the 31-year-old will be back in Northern Ireland.

The judge opted for that course after he heard that any custodial sentence, even if it was suspended, would scupper Millar’s chance of getting a visa to play Down Under.

At an earlier hearing Millar, from Monnaboy Road in Eglinton, Co Derry, entered guilty pleas to being concerned in the supply of class A cocaine between March 18 and May 17 last year.

The 31-year-old father of one, who is captain of his local cup-winning cricket team, also admitted to possession of cocaine as well as a number of prescription drugs including diazepam and tramadol.

Prosecuting counsel told Limavady Magistrates Court, sitting in Coleraine, on Wednesday that acting under a warrant obtained through the misuse of drugs act, police carried out a planned search of Millar’s home on May 17 last year.
