NY: Cocaine-dealing Herkimer County judge resigns

Usually this would sit just in our cocaine column but I think he  deserves an extra special mention in breaking news…

A judge in Herkimer County has resigned while under investigation by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct after being arrested and charged with felonies for possession and sale of cocaine.

Mitchell Q. Soules Jr., a justice of the town of Little Falls, was arrested on June 28, and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The criminal case was handled by Oneida County District Attorney Travis Yoxall.

The Commission authorized an investigation based on the felony arrest, and in September 2023 authorized investigation of a second complaint, alleging that the judge invoked his judicial office in trying to get the police to drive him home from a location where he was stranded.

On April 17, Soules pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony.

In addition to resigning, Soules has agreed never to seek or accept judicial office in the future.
