Indictment of Montenegrin Businessman Details Drug Trafficking

A Montenegrin businessman charged last month in Serbia for his involvement in smuggling nearly two tons of cocaine. According to the indictment obtained by reporters for the Center for Investigative Reporting in Serbia (CINS) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Rodoljub Radulović was a member of a criminal group headed by Darko Šarić. Prosecutors say Radulović owned ships that were used to smuggle drugs from South America to Europe in food and other shipments including soybeans. Both Šarić and Radulović have since disappeared and Šarić is being sought for his role in the seizure of cocaine in a yacht off the Uruguayan coast in 2009.

Mystery Businessman Linked to Šarić Gang Leadership

A shadowy Balkan businessman is a leader and partner in fugitive Darko Šarić’s international drug ring, according to court records and investigative files from agencies in five countries.

Rodoljub Radulović, 63, is among the leadership of Šarić’s criminal enterprise, controlling shipping routes in South America and Europe and running transactions through proxies and shell companies in the Cayman Islands, Serbia, and the Americas. Argentinian prosecution records and Greek police statements obtained by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project show that Radulović and Šarić are targeted by British investigators, the U.S. DEA and South American prosecutors. Additionally, an Italian prosecutor recently linked Šarić’s organization to at least three murders.

A Businessman on the Run

Rodoljub Radulović never had much trouble making friends, partners or money. He built a business reputation by building companies in Russia, Austria, the United States and elsewhere, and arrived back in Belgrade in the early 2000s ready to deal.

On an August night in 2003 Radulović sat at the Koling tennis club in Belgrade’s exclusive Dedinje neighborhood, his favorite haunt and a hangout for businessmen, politicians and Belgrade’s elite. Over drinks Radulović, famed Serbian film producer Maksut Ćatović and real estate developer Milan Zukanović agreed to form a company that would use his supposed American connections to lure big names and produce movies in Serbia.
