Oregon State Bar Approves “Cannabis and Psychedelics Law Section”

We are proud to report that the Oregon State Bar has approved a change in the name of the Cannabis Law Section to the “Cannabis and Psychedelics Law Section.” This makes the Oregon State Bar the first bar association in the country, if not the world, to approve the creation of a section focusing on legal aspects of the nascent psychedelics industry.

The purpose of OSB Sections is to provide specialized information and opportunities to develop and improve skills alongside other attorneys. Each section is designed to enhance lawyers’ specialized skill and knowledge, influence changes in the legislature and community, keep members abreast of developments in their field, provide an avenue for educational and pro bono opportunities and provide a forum to network, build relationships, and express views.

Green Light Law Group partner Andrew DeWeese was among the founding officers of the Cannabis Law Section along with Lee Berger, John Magliana, Aleece Burgio, Edgar Diaz, Courtney Moran, Paul Loney, and Michael Hughes. The OSB Board of Governors approved the creation of the section in September 2016.

“I feel privileged to have helped evolve this section into now embracing the emerging psychedelics practice,” DeWeese said. “Psychedelics have the potential to change the world, and with the passage of Measure 109, Oregon lawyers have a unique opportunity to assist with the birth of a brand new paradigm.”

Andrew, who was chairperson of the Section in 2020, now serves as immediate past-chair on the Section’s Executive Committee. Green Light Law Group partner Perry Salzhauer served as chair in 2019, and is currently the Section’s Treasurer.
