A Maine government survey revealed that, in the past month, one-tenth of the state’s high school students drove under the influence of marijuana.
Furthermore, 17.9% of Maine high school students reported being driven in a car by someone who had used the drug, according to the 2023 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey.
When asked whether they used marijuana in the past 30 days, 10 percent of high schoolers aged 14 and younger in the state answered in the affirmative. However, this proportion grew to 25 percent for students aged 18 and up.
The Maine survey also broke down high school marijuana use by factors such as sex, race, and sexuality.
Female high school students were more likely than their male peers to use marijuana, with past-month use rates standing at 20 and 17.5 percent each.
Past-month marijuana use rates for Asian, black, white, and Hispanic high school students stood at 8.6, 12.8, 18.7, and 26.4 percent, respectively.
And while 16.3 percent of heterosexual Maine high schoolers had used marijuana in the past 30 days, this rate climbed to 25.5 and 28.9 percent of their gay/lesbian and bisexual classmates.
