A call centre worker caught at the wheel after smoking cannabis has been branded a “silly, silly lad” by magistrates.

Shame-faced James Hardy, 20, was given the verbal lashing after confessing his crime in court.

He was arrested after eagle-eyed CCTV operators in South Shields grew suspicious he had taken drugs.

They watched him get into his black Ford Fiesta and drive off on Sunday, February 7 – and contacted police.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard he was pulled over in River Drive, near the seafront.

Hardy, of Hastings Street, Grangetown, Sunderland, is starting a year-long driving ban after admitting a drug-drive charge.

Sentencing him, chair of the bench Gillian Charlton said: “What a silly, silly lad.
