Texas: Former Roma police officer arrested in cannabis trafficking scheme after 13 years on the run in Mexico

A former Roma police officer turned himself in to authorities after 13 years on the run.

Court records indicate Jose Omar Garcia was arrested on Monday, June 3 at the Roma Port of Entry.

Garcia was initially arrested in September 2010 along with six other individuals in connection with a marijuana trafficking scheme, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas.

Garcia and his brother — Roel Roberto Garcia — were officers with the Roma Police Department who were charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana between August 2006 and September 2010.

Also arrested in connection with the investigation was the suspects’ father — Roel Garcia.

After the brothers were arrested, they posted bond and fled to Mexico, the San Antonio Express News reported.

On Monday, Garcia and his lawyers appeared in court. Garcia indicated that his brother also planned on turning himself in, San Antonio Express News reported.

An arraignment hearing for Garcia was set for Tuesday, June 11 in Houston, court records show.

Garcia is currently out on bond.
