Two people have been charged after a truck in Hobart’s northern suburbs that had made a round trip to Victoria was found laden with kilograms of illegal drugs — cocaine, cannabis and ice.
Police said the cocaine bust was one of the largest in Tasmania’s history, with a street value for all the drugs between $700,000 and $1.2 million.
Police intercepted the logistics truck on the Brooker Highway at Glenorchy — about 270 kilometres from the Spirit of Tasmania’s terminal in Devonport — and found 1.4kg of cocaine, 4.6kg of cannabis and 392g of ice in the cabin, they said.
A 60-year-old man from Brighton and a 58-year-old man from Elderslie have been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and were set to appear before Hobart Magistrates Court today.
“As part of a planned investigation, police yesterday seized one of the largest quantities of cocaine ever in Tasmania’s history,” Acting Commander Natasha Freeman said.
