Two Connecticut cannabis stores close less than two years after opening.

There was a sign on Higher Collective’s Willington location before the New Year that read, “We’re taking a winter break.”

That “pause” has officially  become indefinite. Precisely two full years after Connecticut’s recreational cannabis market launched, two of Higher Collective’s retail cannabis shops are closing, the first of Connecticut’s legal cannabis shops to shut their doors.

Higher Collective in Willington and Hartford officially closed Jan. 1, according to an email sent Dec. 30 from Nate Perez Chaves, Higher Collective’s head of retail compliance, to the state Department of Consumer Protection. The email, obtained by CT Insider,  indicates that Dec. 19 was the Willington location’s final date of operation, and that Dec. 21 was the Hartford location’s last day.

Multiple phone calls and emails to Higher Collective were not returned.

Both stores are equity joint ventures, funded in part by by cannabis powerhouse Curaleaf, but run by local partners.
