More than 500 cannabis plants were seized and then shredded in broad daylight following a police raid on a suspected drugs factory in a bustling town centre.

High street shoppers in Colchester, Essex were left stunned as officers stormed a flat above a café and brought dozens of lamps, bulbs and cables out onto the pavement.

Large crowds gathered around as Essex Police used petrol-powered shredders to slice up the cannabis plants for their public spectacle.

Officers decided to destroy the drugs on the high street due to the large volume of plants involved and to limit the potential ‘impact on traffic’.

Shocked shoppers reported the potent smell of cannabis in the air and spoke of their surprise at discovering there had been a drugs factory under their noses all along.

Four people have since been arrested on suspicion of a string of drugs charges, including two men who appeared before Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
