White Earth smoke shop raided for illegal marijuana sales

White Earth authorities said in a news release that they are aware of the recent shutdown of an illegal cannabis dispensary in the evening hours of Wednesday, Aug. 2 in Mahnomen, Minnesota.

According to Mahnomen County Sheriff Josh Guenther, authorities raided the Asema Smokeshop after seeing pictures of people holding large amounts of marijuana that was allegedly sold by the smokeshop. The owner Todd Thompson was allegedly also posting videos, saying he was open for business.

“This is a case here where he’s a tribal member. He has the belief he is allowed to sell marijuana and he’s not,” Guenther said.

Charges are pending against Thompson.

As of Tuesday, the state’s new law allowing the sale of recreational marijuana went into effect, and while sales likely won’t start until sometime next year, due to permitting, the state’s 11 reservations were granted exemptions.
