Portugal: 1,700kg hashish seized in Algarve

The seizure came days after more than 90 bales of hashish were seized from a high-speed vessel on the same river.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) have seized, another 1,700 kilograms of hashish in the Guadiana River, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. The seizure came days after more than 90 bales of hashish were seized from a high-speed vessel on the same river.

In a statement, the police said that as part of a “mission to monitor, control and patrol the coast and territorial sea, in particular in the fight against drug trafficking by sea”, a high-speed vessel was detected “equipped with four high-power engines, navigating with suspicious behaviour towards Barra de Vila Real de Santo António”.

A Maritime Team from the Coastal Control Unit (UCC) was then mobilized to the site to approach the vessel. However, “the suspect vessel reversed course, threw the cargo it was carrying overboard and headed south, without it being possible to intercept it”.

Maritime and land patrols collected the bales of hashish in the vicinity of the Guadiana River and on Santo António beach.
